Watch our 2020 Bright Stars Journey
November 11th, 2020
It feels ages ago since we discovered our Bright Stars for 2020 – Newbarns Primary, had won ‘Best Community Effort’ in the annual competition. It has always been a highlight of our year taking part and the time is upon us to begin another brilliant business journey for 2021.
As our observant followers will know, the Bright Stars competition led by the Centre for Leadership Performance is very close to our hearts and we are so proud have been involved over the years. Working with budding business brains in Cumbria’s primary schools, we’ve observed a wealth of talent emerging across the county and we have every confidence in our business leaders of the future!
For our 2020 entry, Orian partnered with Newbarns Primary School in Barrow who were keen to tap into our professional expertise and create a business idea linked to foodservice. Following a meeting with the group, we settled on ‘Newbarns Souper Soups’, which we would make fresh every week in the school kitchen and sell to parents, teachers and the local community. The school also donated soups the Furness Homeless Shelter, their chosen charity. We were bowled over by the children’s ambition and enthusiasm to think creatively and deliver each week’s delicious fresh flavour. The demand was soon very high which tested the team’s ability to cope under pressure but week-on-week they excelled and no customer was ever left disappointed.
We were also kindly given a stall at Barrow market to enable the pupils to test out their ‘field sales’ and customer service skills. Again, they surpassed expectations and their eye-catching advertisements made sure the stall was always receiving attention and plenty of local custom. It was lovely to see the community getting behind the children’s efforts and wishing them the best in the competition.
There is simply too much to mention in one post about our experience with Newbarns and so this video captures all of the highlights from 8 weeks of selling, strategizing, smiling and of course, soup making! Keep your eyes peeled for news about our plans for the 2021 Bright Stars competition; we can’t wait to get started!
